KNITTED MOTIF BLANKET

Pattern for a Knitted Motif Blanket

FINISHED MEASUREMENTS

The size of the blanket is approximately 1000mm x 800mm depending on tension.

MATERIALS

We generally use a pair of 4.5mm straight knitting needles but you can size up or down to get the right feel. It should not be stiff but should have a gentle drape and be soft to the touch. Use yarn double throughout – it’s best to roll two balls together.

  • Size 4.5mm knitting needles
  • 16 balls Vinnis Nikkim cotton (50g, Natural)
  • Darning needle

INSTRUCTIONS

The blanket base is made up of four separate knitted strips. These are sewn together once the motifs have been embroidered on in duplicate stitch. The pattern does not include motifs as there are so many books and websites offering these – you can choose motifs to suit a particular child or to match the decor in a baby’s room. I have made this blanket with bunches of flowers for gorgeous little twin girls, hearts and pink teddy bears for other baby girls, and boys have had everything from cars, rockets and trains to soccer balls. I often leave two of the stocking stitch squares blank initially, and then embroider the child’s name and date of birth in stem stitch once it is known. This example has the year embroidered diagonally across the blanket. Use your imagination and you will have an absolutely unique blanket!

To finish

Lay out the 4 strips on a damp towel on a flat surface. Pin the strips so that the blocks match horizontally and press gently with a steam iron over a damp cloth. Put the iron down and lift it off (do not move it around). Leave to dry. It is easier to do the embroidery at this stage. Tie off and weave in all the loose ends. Sew the strips together as they lie flat with right sides facing (using the long threads left from casting off or on) through the matching moss stitch bumps. Ease the strips together so they lie flat and if necessary press again gently.

Lace edging

The two edging strips are knitted to sufficient length to fit easily to the short edges of the blanket as per the pattern below. Sew the edging to the strips, easing as you go.

  • Row 1: sl 1, k1, (yon, k2tog) twice, yon, k2.
  • Row 2: k2, yon, k2, (yon, k2tog) twice, k1.

  • Row 4: k2, yon, k4, (yon, k2tog) twice, k1.
